Jean-Baptiste Nadeau, son of Ossany Nadeau, and his descendants
by Ken Roy
Jean-Baptiste Nadeau, son of Joseph Ossany Nadeau and Marguerite Abraham, was born on 16 April 1669 and baptized on 22 April 1669 at Saint-Paul, l’Île d’Orléans, province of Quebec, Canada. According to Bernard Nadeau in his book Canuck Odyssey, records for Saint-Paul were maintained at Sainte-Famille until 23 July 1679, thus, some sources erroneously report Jean (Baptiste) as born and baptized at Sainte-Famille.
Jean married Anne Cassé, daughter of Antoine Cassé and Françoise Pitié in 1689 at Sainte-Famille, l’Île d’Orleans, province of Quebec, Canada. She was born 29 August 1671 in Saint-Famille, l’Île d’Orleans, province of Quebec, Canada. Anne died 11 June 1754 in Saint-Nicolas, Lauzon, province of Quebec, Canada, at the age of 82. Jean died on 28 February 1735, at the age of 65, and was buried on 1 March 1735 at Saint-Etienne, Beauport, province of Quebec, Canada.
His brother Denis married Charlotte Cassé, Anne’s sister. Thus both Nadeau descendant lines of Joseph-Ossany Nadeau are also descendant lines of Antoine Cassé, since both brothers married two sisters, the daughters of Antoine Cassé and Françoise Pitié.
Jean-Baptiste and Anne had 12 children.
Jean-Baptiste Nadeau was born 15 June 1690 and baptized on 18 June 1690 in Levis, province of Quebec, Canada. He died and was buried 14 January 1716 at the age of 26 in Beaumont, province of Quebec, Canada.
Marguerite Nadeau was born 20 January 1692 in Levis, province of Québec, Canada. She married Charles Gesseron on 26 January 1712.
Angelique Nadeau was born and baptized on 11 November 1694. She married Denis Gontier on 26 Novembere 1714.
Marie-Madeleine Nadeau was born 19 November 1695 and baptized on 20 November 1695 in Saint-Laurent, l’Île d’Orleans, province of Quebec, Canada. She died in infancy on 4 December 1695 in Saint-Laurent, l’Île d’Orleans, province of Quebec, Canada.
Marie was born and baptized on 1 March 1697 and baptized at Saint-Laurent, l’Île d’Orleans, province of Quebec, Canada. She was a religious sister at the general hospital of Quebec. Records indicate she entered the novitiate on 20 October 1716 and processed her vows on 21 April 1718 as Sister Sainte-Madeleine.
Antoine Nadeau was born and baptized on 12 February 1700 in Saint-Laurent, l’Île d’Orleans, province of Quebec, Canada. He married Marguerite Turgeon 6 May 1726 in Saint-Etienne, Beaumont, province of Quebec, Canada. She was the daughter of Zacharie Turgeon and Isabelle Roy. Marguerite died 8 November 1763 in Saint-Nicolas, province of Quebec, Canada. (This is the ancestral line of Bernard Nadeau, author of Canuck Odyssey.)
Child Nadeau was born, baptized and died on 7 September 1702 in Saint-Laurent, l’Île d’Orleans, province of Quebec, Canada.
Joseph was born and baptized on 11 December 1703 at Saint-Laurent, l’Île d’Orleans. He died as an infant on 28 February 1705 and was buried on 1 March 1705 at Saint-Laurent.
Marie-Anne Nadeau was born 7 October 1706 in Saint-Laurent, l’Île d’Orleans, province of Quebec, Canada. She married Augustin Guignard 29 October 1720 in Berthier, province of Quebec, Canada. René Jetté’s Dictionnaire généalogique des famille du Québec indicates she died on 22 October 1725 and was buried at Beaumont.
Elizabeth Nadeau was born 7 June 1709 in Saint-Laurent, l’Île d’Orleans, province of Quebec, Canada. She married Pierre Couillard 22 July 1727.
Louis Nadeau was born 25 March 1715 in Beaumont, province of Quebec, Canada. He married Anne-Genevieve Duquet 8 November 1732.
Joseph Nadeau was born 25 March 1712 in Beaumont, province of Quebec, Canada. Joseph, Louis’s twin died in childhood 27 Septembre 1714, at the age of 2.
Marie-Madeleine Nadeau was born 8 August 1715 in Beaumont, province of Quebec, Canada, died in childhood 15 Octobre 1725 at the age of 10.
Descendants of Antoine Nadeau and Marguerite Turgeon settled in Levis and later in Richelieu before moving to Rhode Island where Bernard Nadeau was born. The above information was extracted substantially from Bernard’s Canuck Odyssey. This book provides a wonderful historical setting for the different generations of Jean-Baptiste and Anne Cassé’s descendants …
